What is vibration plate machine?

Vibration plate machines are exercise devices designed to cause the muscles in your body to continuously contract when you stand on them, writes Dr. Kristie Leong, a family practice physician, on HealthMed. The function is to help you build strength and possibly burn calories. Many gyms in the U.S. offer the use of vibrating machines in their exercise facilities, and you can purchase them from fitness retailers for at-home use.

The Theory

Vibrating machines activate your body’s stretching reflex, which forces your muscles to contract with no effort on your part, according to the American Council on Exercise. ACE likens the effect to a doctor tapping under your kneecap with a small hammer, causing your leg to kick. The result could be increased strength and power.

The Methodology

You can just stand on an operating vibrating machine to use it as exercise, says Leong. But she says you can also perform exercises such as lunges and squats while standing on a vibrating machine in the attempt to enhance the workout. An average vibration plate exercise session runs 10-15 mins.

The Experts Say. . .

Although training on a vibration machine might help improve balance and improve muscle strength in elderly adults, you should not use it as a shortcut to lose weight, says Lashowski. Incorporate strength training, cardiovascular exercise and a healthy diet into your daily routine, Lashowski says. Traditional exercises have proven health benefits, such as reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, which a vibration plate may not provide.

Traditional exercise supplemented with whole body vibration has been shown to reduced pain and fatigue in women. It can help improve balance in older adults, as well as reduce bone loss, even alleviate pain.  

Clinical Data Shows

In a study conducted by the Artesis University College in Antwerp, Belgium, 61 obese or overweight people were divided into four groups that received differing treatments to determine the weight-loss effects of the various treatments. At the end of the study, the group that received weekly vibration plate machine exercise instruction lost an average of 10.5 percent of their body weight, and maintained the loss throughout the duration of the study. A group that received a diet and regular conventional exercise instruction lost and maintained an average of 7 percent; a diet-only group lost and maintained an average of 6 percent, and the control group gained 1.5 percent. Although the research shows encouraging results for vibration plate machines, more research is needed to confirm that the machines are beneficial for weight loss, study leader Dirk Vissers says in a 2009 “Eureka Alert.”

People who are out of shape and considered sedentary can start their vibration exercise workouts by simply standing on the plate, knees flexed. This is supposed to stimulate natural muscle contractions and get blood flowing. People who are used to exercise can add actual exercise movements while on the equipment to enhance the effects of both the vibration plates and the exercise. Some of the exercises you can do on vibration equipment include squats, calf raises, front and side lunges, pelvic thrusts done with your feet on the equipment while lying with your back on the floor, push-ups both with your hands on the vibrating deck and also with your feet on the deck, triceps dips done from the deck, and scissors exercise for your abs done while seated on the deck.

1. Terribly Thin

Some people are crippling scared of being thin. This quite natural because people fear what they don’t know. They don’t have answers to: What will happen? How will people react to me? Do I want all the attention?

The only way to resolve this fear is first, acknowledging it. Then, we must accept. 2. Breakable Bonds

All self-sabotage is, is when you do the opposite of what will help you reach your weight loss goal. Through your justification and rationalization most won’t recognize it as sabotage, which is the hardest part.

4. “Screw It!”

Sometimes we just say ‘screw it’ to our health and fitness. It’s our internal conflict that wants to go against the grain and break the rules. We structure our goals, and it’s like a protest is happening in our inside. This inner Rebel is powerful and must be reckoned with. Recognizing the problem will slow the protesting.

5. Anticipated failure

Hopelessness. There is a sense of despair and futility that can trap us in a powerful cycle self-fulfilling prophecy. For those that have tried this change in lifestyle, they create goals with failure in mind; thinking it’s pointless before they start their journey. They have failed time and time again.

Green Tea has been plaster all over the media as weight loss gold, but are there really benefits or is it just hype? Fortunately, there are no fallacies here, studies have concluded the relationship behind green tea and weight loss is the secret to managing a unique weight loss.

The main way green tea aids in management of weight is by stopping the degradation of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter which plays a key factor in helping the body drop pounds. Here’s how:

The body naturally produces a chemical called catechol-O-methyltransferase, or COMT, which maintains the production and activity of norepinephrine. Green tea has catechins, chemical substances that inhibit COMT to prevent it from breaking down norepinephrine. The more neurotransmitter available the more the body loses weight.

Like most green tea supplement ads have mentioned, the tea contains various catechin – the greatest concentrated one is epigallocatechin 3=gallate or EGCG. These supplement cut down the need to consume a boatload of tea just to receive the weight loss benefits.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition have published studies that green tea extract helps in weight loss. One study looked into both fat oxidation – which is how well the body burns fat – and the body’s ability to control and tolerate glucose with and without green tea supplementation. They concluded that the subjects given the supplements had a better glucose tolerance and saw a higher fat-burning activity; about 17% percent greater than the subjects who didn’t.

Another study in the journal, determined if the catechins in green tea really promote weight loss or if the extra fat-burning activity demonstrated by tea could actually be attributed to the beverage’s caffeine. Their subjects were placed in three groups – one group was given green tea supplements,  another received caffeine supplements, and a placebo to the third group. Then they looked at how much energy the body use in a days time. The results found that the group given the green tea supplements had a drastic increase in energy in comparison to the other groups; meaning the fat-burning ingredients of green tea have zero to do with the caffeine contained in the beverage and the study concluded: Green tea promotes fat oxidation with no relation to its caffeine content.

Green Tea doesn’t just help increase the amount of fat burned, but it advocates the body from collecting additional fat. Green tea’s ECGC content makes it effective at decreasing the accumulation of fat.
